Why You Need a Social Media Detox – Like Yesterday…


Hi friends & Happy October! It’s officially my favorite month of the year and I could not be more excited.

This past weekend, I got to stand by one of my sweet girlfriend’s sides as she married the man of her dreams. Complete with an insane venue (Frogtown Cellars in Dahlonega – GORGEOUS), the most perfect fall weather, my handsome date and lots of good wine and good food, it was an amazing weekend.

As someone who’s self-admittedly addicted to social media, I decided to take a little breather and just be PRESENT – and it made such a difference. I maybe spent ten minutes on Instagram tops (because quitting cold turkey is hard, k?)

I felt completely present, not worried about what other friends were doing that weekend or what they were wearing or where they were traveling to. I was able to focus on the here and now, and it truly was a breath of fresh air.

The funny part was that I didn’t even miss it. There wasn’t a moment where I thought “I need to go grab my phone!” It stayed in the bridal suite during the entire wedding.

Sometimes, it’s so important to take a step back, unplug and appreciate what’s happening around you instead of worrying about what’s happening in some far off Internet land.

We’ve become so engrossed in the world of social media – and don’t get me wrong, I think it’s very cool in the way that it connects us and how it has changed the way we communicate. However, being mindful and present in the moment is a lost art that I think we could all focus on a little bit more.

My little social media detox made me feel grateful, energized and content. Instead of worrying about capturing the perfect blogger shot in (literally) the most picturesque setting, I laughed with my friends and boyfriend, danced the night away and made memories I’ll always remember.

I think I’m going to try to do this at least once a week moving forward and see how it goes. Who’s with me?

Everyone Could Use a Little Staycation

Hi babes! It’s officially the summertime and the perfect time for a staycation. I recently stayed at the Hotel Indigo Atlanta Downtown for an overnight staycation and had the best time relaxing and just having a cozy night in.

The hotel was super cute and modern, which I loved. They have this huge acrylic-looking staircase in the middle of the lobby that I’m obsessed with. (It was under renovation BUT it’s the perfect place for your IG pics, let me tell ya.)

I love the idea of a staycation because 1) the travel time is way shorter (luckily for me, I only live six minutes away) 2) you save money – because you’re eliminating the travel part 3) you can still hit up your fave spots 4) there’s just something boujee about staying in a hotel when you live – like – minutes away. Fun, fun.

So Friday evening, we headed over to the hotel for a fun night, which we obviously started with a little champs!

We proceeded to the lobby bar for a drink before heading out to one of our fave restaurants for a casual dinner – Superica. Guys, if you haven’t been here, drop what you’re doing, order an O.G. marg and the barbacoa tacos and thank me later. Life-changing.

Again, it was only a short Uber ride away so that was lovely. After dinner, we headed back to the hotel like the grandparents we are to stay in and watch some TV.

The hotel room, like the rest of the hotel, was very chic, clean and modern. Lots of bright whites, clean lines and just an overall modern design that I was very into.

And the bed was SO comfy. I could’ve slept in forever on Saturday!

Saturday morning, we woke up and headed to JP Atlanta in their lobby for brunch. We ordered the JP Omelette and Blueberry French Toast – because you’ve obviously gotta have sweet & savory. Both dishes were really, really good and the coffee was a’flowin’.

After brunch, we packed up and headed home! Spending just one night away from home was such a nice treat and something I highly recommend as a fun girls night, date night, or even by yourself. I would SO do a solo staycation, book a spa appointment, order room service and champagne – YES.

Fake It ‘Til You Make It

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this concept of Fake it ’til you make it. We hear it a lot, but what does it really mean?

Let’s start out by saying no one likes a fake. No one wants to be friends with that girl who is one way to your face and another when she leaves the room. No one likes the person who is super fake on Instagram when really you know she is someone completely different in real life – yawn. I think we’re all kind of over that.

Now it’s all about being authentic, real and showing your true colors. I think we can all appreciate that. So, faking it ’til you make it is not actually about being fake, but it’s about a mindset.

I’ve seen this idea play out in my life a lot recently. I’ll preface this by saying I am not good at it. I wear my heart on my sleeve and am usually pretty open with people. If I meet you and connect with you right off the bat, chances are I’ll let you in pretty quickly. While I don’t necessarily think this is a bad quality to have, it sometimes bites me in the ass, because after talking about an issue or a problem going on in my life multiple times to multiple people, it doesn’t make me feel better, but usually worse. What a concept, right?!

I’ll give a couple examples.

A lot of my sweet friends have been asking lately, excitedly, “So how’s the blog going? It looks like you’re doing so many cool/fun/great things!” to which my response has typically been something like “Ugh thanks, it’s not that good… I don’t have any free time to work on it so it’s not where I want it to be. Blah blah blah…”  Why not just say “Thank you so much, I really love doing it! I’m really passionate about it!” and work with the mindset of, ‘damn, it is going pretty well and something I should be proud of’ – even though it may not be exactly where I want it just yet – fake it ’til you make it.

Another one. I’ve been taking barre3 classes for about three months now. My boyfriend and I both try to live pretty healthy lifestyles and have made working out a regular part of our routines, so he’ll often ask me “How’s barre going?” and I immediately say something like “Oh, you know, it’s going okay…” instead of “It’s going really well! My butt feels firmer, I feel great after I leave class AND my triceps are so sore!” Just because I’m not at the “end of my journey” and just because I don’t have this amazing body after three months of doing this workout, I’m hesitant to fully answer the question. Why is that?

It reminds me of that saying: Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit. Talk about your joys. 

We love to tell people about our problems, because we think it’ll make us feel better – which, sometimes it does – but when we repeat the same issues over and over again, it makes it nearly impossible to clear our minds of them.

So, I think the concept of Fake it ’til you make it means adapting the mindset of where you want to be when you have “made it.” For me, it means accepting where I am with my blog and being proud of it, as if I’ve already made it to *big time blogger status* and being happy with where I am in my journey with barre3, without putting pressure on myself to not really talk about it until I reach “the end” and achieve the results I’m looking to achieve.

It simply comes down to being confident and secure and owning where you are in life.
